Beyond the Decibels

A Self-Exploration of London's Sound Pollution

Interactive Map

We decided to create an interactive map to display our collected data and make it more accessible and comprehensible. Our map marks five specific coordinates from each of our journeys into the Greencoat campus with a small circle. When the viewer clicks on each circle, it turns white and plays the field recording from that specific location. The map is in scale with the real proportions.

There are five circles, representing each of our homes and five lines that connect each one to a larger circle in the centre of the map which represents Greencoat.

Colours Key:

Greencoat - Blue

Iñaki - Red

Molly - Green

Iman - Pink

Sam - Orange

Pedro - Purple

Lena - Yellow

Our goal was to create a data visualisation that could be interacted with and represent our collected data in a more abstract way in order to take the focus away from the data itself and turn the viewer’s attention to the sounds themselves. The result is to hopefully get people thinking about the sound pollution they subconsciously experience on a daily basis on their own journeys.
